The Life of a Mercenary

Once upon a time this game had a storyline. It still does but usually only as an excuse to fight more of the Infected. The mercenaries used to have a detailed biography on how they ended up fighting UAF vs Warcorp but Nexon has all but abandoned these details.

This is highlighted in Episode 1 of Nexon's Blabber Box webseries. In one of the "Mercs" skits, Mei and Hana are seen talking in a women's restroom, located somewhere in Pump Jack. Hana explains to Mei that she is thinking about the brutality of simulated warfare and then realises that it isn't even warfare but just pointless battle and that she isn't "killing and dying for a cause".

However, her biography tells us that Hana decided to work for Warcorp in order to get "closer to Baron, secretly intent on making him pay for all the grief and heartache she has endured throughout her life". The 'grief and heartache' refers to that fact that Baron (another mercenary) may have been involved in her younger brother's death with the UAF. She is now "consumed with a thirst for vengeance" or at least was.

The biographies are now no longer available to be read under "Detail Info" in the Arsenal - this further solidifies that their biographies are no longer relevant, worked into the game or highlighted by Nexon. Then again... much of the player base is blissfully unaware of their backstories as seen in the April 20th 2010 poll asking "Although I've been a mercenary for quite some time, I could have been an Olympian! Who am I?" in which the correct answer was the least picked.

Since the biographies of the mercenaries are history, they'll feature in the blog post. Click on the merc's name to view their biography. Click their name again to hide their biography.

Baron

An excellent, natural-born soldier who specializes in urban close-quarters battle, Baron is one of the core members of the Warcorp PMC. He is extremely close with the enigmatic Colonel Miles Coleman – one of Warcorp’s governing Board of Directors and widely known as Warcorp’s "brain."

Baron’s friendship with Coleman, a legendary figure amongst all soldiers, had its beginnings in Baron’s first combat mission. At the time, Lieutenant Miles Coleman, a lead military intelligence officer and rising star for the UAF, was stranded in enemy territory after his transport chopper was shot down returning from a top-secret briefing. Baron, one of the youngest recruits of UAF Special Forces, volunteered for the rescue mission. After many UAF commandos were cut down in an ambush as they assaulted the compound where Coleman was being held, Baron was able to continue the mission and singlehandedly save and extract the lieutenant, as well as three other survivors, despite his relative lack of combat experience.

Impressed by the young soldier’s natural combat skills, Coleman became a mentor for Baron, and upon Coleman’s personal recommendation, brought him over to the black ops side of UAF Spec Ops. The two men carried out multiple missions throughout the African and Middle Eastern theaters: Coleman as the o

p commander, with Baron and his men in the field. When Colonel Coleman suddenly betrayed the UAF after Operation Sand Hog (for reasons unknown) and became part of Warcorp, Baron decided to follow suit. Joining Coleman, Baron is known as both Coleman’s personal bodyguard, and his top strike force commander. Coleman continues to send Baron out on the missions of paramount importance to Warcorp secret operating agenda.

Deckland

A former Strike Force commander of Special Forces Operations Detachment - Delta, Deckland was recruited by the private military corporation "Warcorp" for his unparalleled knowledge of counter-terrorism tactics and urban operations. Over his nine year tenure with Delta, he carried out over 27 highly classified combat missions, developing a specialty in extracting high value targets from hot zones.

Deckland seems to find the base motivations of most of his current mercenary compatriots contemptible, and it remains a mystery why such a decorated veteran would seek employ with a PMC that is widely reviled and regarded to be unscrupulous. Sources point to his visits to a young, terminally-ill patient at a stateside hospital; unconfirmed reports indicate this may be his illegitimate daughter, but the ultra-professional soldier rebuffs all comment about his personal life.

Hana

Trained by her loving father, Hana was once poised to be the next great Olympic shooter, a shoe-in for a Japanese gold. But her father's tragic death in an automobile accident left her dispirited and angry. Unwilling to continue her training and skilled in little more than the rifle, she was recruited as a sniper for the East Asia Detachment of the UAF.

Hana begged her younger brother not to follow her into service, but the allure of the UAF Special Assault Team was irresistible for the young man. On his first mission out, Central Command lost contact with his entire unit. Hana joined the Search and Rescue team dispatched to retrieve them only to return with her brother's body. Riddled with guilt and emotionally exhausted, she resigned her UAF commission and swore never to pick up a rifle again.

It was not long after her brother's funeral, though, that an anonymous informant presented her with irrefutable proof that on that fateful mission, unit commander Baron (now a top level mercenary for Warcorp) was directly responsible for her brother's accidental death. Consumed with a thirst for vengeance, Hana took up arms once again.

Her incredible UAF record made her an attractive candidate to Warcorp executives, who hired her on the spot as a sniper specialist. Now, mission after mission, she works her way closer to Baron, secretly intent on making him pay for all the grief and heartache she has endured throughout her life.

Hauser

A Security Consultant for NEMEXIS Corp., Hauser is a highly capable soldier who overwhelms his enemies with his incredible strength. Not much is known about his past, but it is clearly painful for him to think about. Fellow Mercenaries have confided that his work has taken him all across the globe, which explains the variety of influences in his unique accent. Rumors surround Hauser after his recent and sudden departure from the UAF; many soldiers believe the loss of his squad to a botched secret mission turned the muscled behemoth rogue.
Hauser is an unyielding mercenary with a powerful physique. Soldiers know him as a relentless killing machine, hunting down the enemy and exterminating anyone in his way. His immense strength puts Hauser in a class of his own. He is equipped with a special Commando Vest.

Kamara

If there is one thing that Kamara knows it's how to set things off: whether it's through a well-placed explosive or some well-chosen words. Throughout her life, Kamara's mouth has continually gotten her into trouble, but she always had the fighting chops to back up her words. However, after instigating one too many fights, her hard-as-nails widower father eventually sent the young girl off to military school. Little did he realize how well his daughter would take to her new environment. Kamara joined the UAF directly thereafter, and as a talented recruit, immediately chose a role to match her loud personality: a specialist in heavy-weapons, trained in both launching offensive assaults and providing fire support. While the military gave Kamara the discipline and focus to become an excellent soldier, it was never able to shut her up.

Kamara was contemplating entering the private sector as a highly paid consultant before her formerUAF commanders approached her with a more compelling proposition. As of late, Warcorp has been recruiting ex-UAF members at an alarming rate, promising the kind of wealth and political favor not afforded on a government pension. Not only has this possibly compromised UAF military intelligence, it has also given the PMC a decisive advantage in engaging in global conflicts even over established military forces. To combat this, UAF CentCom has tasked Kamara with following her former squadmates into the ranks of Warcorp and gathering intelligence on how UAF training is being exploited at the company.

After months of operating under Warcorp, Kamara has finally reestablished trust with her former comrades-in-arms while at the same time managing to deflect suspicion from Warcorp officials. Close to uncovering why Colonel Coleman is recruiting so heavily from the pool of ex-UAF operatives, Kamara has recently learned that she is under surveillance by an outside civilian contractor that Warcorp has brought in as a consultant. This new "consultant," a woman named Mei, has been prying into Kamara's past – and current – ties with the UAF, threatening to undermine the relationships she had built at Warcorp. Through her own back channels to the UAF, Kamara has learned that Mei's background is suspiciously blank, calling into question her true allegiances. Regardless of who this new spook works for, the last thing the headstrong Kamara will do is let anyone stand in the way of her and her mission.

Maxine

Her real name is Maxine but nobody ever calls her that. Her friends call her “Max.” Her enemies call her that blur in the distance just before they lose the ability to speak… forever. Max is fast, smart and has a cheery personality totally at odds with her expertise in guerilla warfare. Don’t let her smile fool you. Max is a very dangerous opponent.

Note that "Max" is the latest mercenary to be released and that Nexon did not spend much time at all on her bio. Whether this is because Nexon does not focus much on the storyline or because she is hired via GP is unknown.

Mei

A non-com officer of the secretive paramilitary group "Creed", Mei was selected for "non-standard" operations by Creed commanders for both her combat skills and her tactical abilities on the field. Highly intelligent, Mei has shown an uncanny ability to quickly adapt to new situations, as well as a particular knack for espionage.

Her latest mission involves tracking down a Creed double agent presumed to be ultimately working for the PMC "Warcorp". Mei has assumed a different identity to infiltrate Warcorp’s ranks, and her current whereabouts are unknown.

Rocco

Rocco previously served as a Major in the UAF Counter-Terrorist Task Force where his exceptional strategy and incisive tactics made him an effective and respected commissioned officer. Despite his distinguished service record, Rocco abruptly decided to leave the military after a personal tragedy.

Five years ago, Rocco lost his family in a devastating car accident. During the lengthy investigation, evidence pointed to the possibility that Miles Coleman (Rocco’s commanding officer in Operation Desert Thunder) and Warcorp were somehow involved in the tragedy. Bent on revenge, Rocco joined Warcorp in order to find those responsible.

Now, as a Warcorp associate and freelance mercenary, Rocco travels the world, finishing contract after contract no matter the risk – all the while trying to hide his true intentions. As he cuts a path through kidnappings, “threatening” groups and underworld empires, he continues to investigate the connection of Warcorp and its leader, Miles Coleman, to the loss of his family in an attempt to uncover the truth behind the accident and punish those responsible.

Zadan

As a former noncom of UAF Special Forces, Zadan is a risk-taker with a hot temper, one of the many reasons why he was consistently assigned to carry out one-man missions alone. Despite the low-survivability rating of these operations, he meticulously and successfully completed all of the missions he was assigned. Even though he was one of the most difficult personalities to work with both on and off the battlefield, Zadan was respected by fellow soldiers for his fighting prowess and was acknowledged by his superiors for his undeniable dependability.

However, a single mistake he made during a black ops mission in South America led to the blown cover of a key undercover UAF asset, and the death of one of Zadan’s closest colleagues. The military courts found him responsible for an error in judgement, but due to Zadan’s usefulness and the grey nature of the mission, his superiors sought to bury all record of the whole operation. Shaken by his feelings of responsibility for his friend’s death, Zadan refused to cover up the incident and take the slap on the wrist; for that, he was dishonorably discharged from the Special Forces. Returning home, Zadan finds himself unable to adjust back to life in society due to the psychological stresses overwhelming him. After months of doing unfulfilling bodyguard work for high net worth individuals, Zadan decides to return to the battlefield as a private mercenary... to face his ghosts, and restore his own sense of honor.
